A Cathedral Rock engagement session in Sedona is pure magic. With its towering red cliffs, sweeping desert views, and sunsets that set the whole landscape glowing, it’s no wonder this spot is one of Arizona’s most iconic locations for couples. Whether you’re after a quick, intimate adventure or a full-day hike, Cathedral Rock delivers unforgettable backdrops at every turn
But here’s the truth: your Cathedral Rock engagement doesn’t have to include summiting the entire trail to be amazing.
For this couple’s session, we kept things relaxed and stopped before the final scramble — and it was still pure magic. The views were breathtaking, the atmosphere was laid-back, and the focus stayed exactly where it should be: on the two of them enjoying the moment together.
If you’re dreaming of a Sedona engagement session at Cathedral Rock, here’s how to make the most of it — whether you hike to the top or not.

Epic views from start to finish – You’ll get incredible backdrops before you ever reach the summit, including Sedona’s cliffs and wide-open desert landscapes.
Variety in one location – Cathedral Rock offers red rock ledges, desert vegetation, and panoramic viewpoints all along the trail.

Adventure for all comfort levels – You can customize your hike to match your comfort level, making it perfect for both seasoned hikers and casual explorers.
The Cathedral Rock Trail is one of Sedona’s most popular hikes — and for good reason. The mix of epic views and just enough challenge makes it unforgettable. It’s a short one at only 1.2 miles round trip with about 700 feet of elevation gain. Not the steepest hike I’ve ever done, but it still packs a punch.
A few minutes in, the trail can get a little confusing. Luckily, rock cairns mark the way, guiding you toward the right path. One of the fun things about this trail is that it isn’t always a simple “follow the path” kind of hike — sometimes you get to scramble up slick rock to keep going.
The best part? There’s a one-way scramble that looks a lot steeper than it really is. I’ve done it in a wedding dress, but I’ll be the first to say it can feel intimidating. And here’s the thing — you never have to feel bad about turning around if a hike makes you uncomfortable. The hardest part is finding hand and foot holds since they’re not clearly marked, but this trail sees a lot of traffic, so there’s almost always someone nearby willing to help.

Once you make it past the scramble, the rest of the trail is easy going. For this couple, comfort came first and they didn’t feel like continuing to the top, so we stopped shortly after the scramble. And honestly? The views there were still incredible.
That said, I’ve hiked all the way to the top in a wedding dress and it was epic. The views, the vibe, the sunset — absolute chef’s kiss perfection.
If you do plan a Cathedral Rock engagement session at sunset, just know you’ll need headlamps for the way down. Trust me, you don’t want to navigate that trail in the dark without them.
